OzGIS Installation for WINDOWS
==============================
The software is supplied on floppy disks with most files compressed by
the ZIP program.
The files must all be first copied to the hard disk drive that you are going to
use.
Two directories are used:
\OZGIS holds all the system files
\OZDEMO contains example mapping files.
You must use the same disk drive as that holding \OZGIS for your own mapping
directories.
The installation procedure is as follows:
1. set up the \OZGIS directory
CD \
MKDIR OZGIS
2. copy all files from floppy disk to the \OZGIS directory
CD \OZGIS
COPY a:*.* (for each disk)
3. Run the installation procedure
INSTALL
4. Print the manual (220 pages).
PRINT \OZGIS\OZWIN.DOC
The WOTSNEW.DOC file contains details of changes to the system.
5. Follow the procedure in the manual to install the programs into WINDOWS
and to configure OzGIS.
This is in the early chapter INSTALLATION
6. Work through the manual following the examples to see how to use OzGIS.
You should at least read the two early chapters:
DATA ENTRY and
BASIC CHOROPLETH MAPPING EXAMPLE
These chapters tell how to bring data into the system and display it, and may
be all you need to know to start displaying maps.
OzGIS should run on any WINDOWS3.1 system with at least 4Meg of RAM and a
mouse. A 386 or 486 processor is required.
It is recommended that you use the highest resolution and largest number
of colours available to you. A 1Mbyte super VGA video card with matching
monitor and WINDOWS screen driver will give 1024X768 resolution and 256
colours.
QUICK DEMO
==========
The OzGIS demo disk is supplied with the system. It contains a set of example
maps, and you should look at it first to see some of the OzGIS system
capablilities. You can run the demonstration directly off the floppy or can
copy the floppy files to a directory, CD to that directory and type OZDEMO to
execute the OZDEMO.EXE program.
Basic configuration ......................
The manual will lead you through the configuration of your system and simple
examples. You can try the following, but if there are any problems GO TO THE
MANUAL.
You will have to define the programs to WINDOWS:
Installation requires setting up (optionally) a program group and then defining
program items in it. This is described fully in the WINDOWS documentation.
The installation procedure will attempt to set up a program group for you
which assumes you are using the C: drive. If this fails or you are using a
different hard drive, you will need to set up groups as follows:
Suppose the directories are on disk drive D: as D:\OZGIS and D:\OZDEMO
Then you might first set up a program group (or select the OzGIS group if
there).
Select "New" from the "Files" menu in the Program Manager and
give the new program group the name "OzGIS"
Then define all the programs and their directories as follows:
Description: Demonstration
Command line: d:\ozgis\ozdemo
Work Directory: d:\ozdemo
Description: Demo OzGIS
Command line: d:\ozgis\wozgis 12 <--------- note the 12 code
Work Directory: d:\ozdemo
Description: Demo Simple Census Mapping
Command line: d:\ozgis\wozgis 15 <--------- note the 15 code
Work Directory: d:\ozdemo
Description: Demo OzMap
Command line: d:\ozgis\wozmap.exe
Work Directory: d:\ozdemo
Description: Demo Vector
Command line: d:\ozgis\vector.exe
Work Directory: d:\ozdemo
If your version of WINDOWS does not allow you to specify a working directory
you should move all the files from \OZDEMO to \OZGIS as that will be the
working directory.
IMPORTANT ........... most problems with installing OzGIS are caused by either
not enough RAM (4Mbytes) or not setting up the groups properly. If you have
other software loaded (e.g. network) you may not have enough RAM. Try a swap
file.
Now you can display maps using files supplied with the system:
First ...................
Within WINDOWS run the "Demonstration" program item that you just set up.
This will display a series of saved screens and associated text, and will give
an overview of the OzGIS system.
Next ...................
Within WINDOWS run the "Simple Mapping" program item that you just set up.
This is a subset of the main OzGIS program that is useful for learning the
fundamentals of the mapping system. It is suitable for mapping of attribute
data such as Census data.
You select OzGIS options from pulldown menus at the top level and then from
other menus that pop up in the window. The menu changes according to what you
are doing. A new menu appears whenever you can make a selection. If you click
above the menu it will disappear, and clicking within the window will display it
again.
Select the DISPLAY A NEW MAP option from the MAPPING pulldown menu and then
give the file names for the Far East Asia map as attribute file FEA and
geographic file FEA.
A map will be displayed.
You can try other options such as displaying the next attribute off the FEA
file.
Each time you select an option a new map will be displayed.
Finally choose QUIT from the Files Menu.
Now try the full OzGIS system ......................
Within WINDOWS run the "Demo OzGIS" program item that you just set up.
The first example..............
First display a map of Australia where the polygons are coloured according to
the attribute data. This is a very common type of map for displaying Census
data, sales, government statistics etc
Choose DISPLAY ZONES FOR AN ATTRIBUTE FILE from the Map pulldown menu.
give the attribute file name as OZ
give the geographic file name as OZ
You will have a default map with legend and distribution diagram. The legend
has the numbers of zones in each class on the left and the class value ranges
to the right of the coloured boxes.
You will find that the map does not change when you choose an option. This
enables several parameters to be set before going through the slow map drawing
process. You have to specifically ask for the changes to be applied.
Select "Display map" from the Files menu, which regenerates the display, and
usually happens automatically.
Now a second example............
Now display some geographics data - the islands of Hawaii and rivers.
Select "Top menu" from the Files menu.
menu.
Choose DISPLAY GEOGRAPHIC FILES from the Map pulldown menu.
Choose the menu option DISPLAY POLYGONS FROM A GEOGRAPHIC FILE
Give the file name as "HAWDLGWB".
Accept the default polygon number and give the legend text as "Hawaii".
Accept the default (No) for drawing polygon boundaries.
The islands of Hawaii will be drawn.
Choose the option OVERLAY LINE SEGMENTS FROM A GEOGRAPHIC FILE
Give the file name "HAWDLGST"
Accept the default line number and give the legend text as "Rivers".
This example uses two files originally in DLG-3 optional format, off the USGS
CD-ROM. This is a simplified example; usually feature codes in these files are
used to subset the data e.g. to draw rivers and streams in different colours.
Finally -
Choose "Quit" from the File menu.
The manual will provide further information on configuring the system
and on how to use the system.
